We recently performed a Home Energy Audit and Energy Retrofits on a 2,500 square foot, single-story ranch home in Fort Collins. The home was built in 1978 and was under-insulated, although there was insulation in the floor. The windows had also been previously replaced. Homeowners reported that parts of the home were cold in the wintertime due to a variety of causes. The whole house tended to overheat in the summer, primarily because of the lack of insulation and a dark-colored, metal roof and siding and lack of attic ventilation.
Here is a more detailed description of the energy improvements we made to the house along with the costs and payback period.
Cost Materials & Labor
Attic insulation was increased from R-30 to R-49 with blown cellulose
Walls were insulated from none to R-15 with blown-in cellulose
General weatherization, sealing air leaks with foam and caulk – 4 hours
Duct Sealing and insulated of exposed ducts in crawl space – 8 hours
Double-pane windows were covered with insulated blinds and curtains x8
Attic ventilation fan was installed
Low-flow shower head installed in teenagers/guest bathroom
Compact florescent lights replaced incandescent x 20
Programmable thermostat installed
